Whistling Straits in Wisconsin Is The Venue For Ryder Cup 2020

The next Ryder Cup, the biennial golf tournament that showcases the best golfers from Europe and America, is set to happen at Whistling Straits Golf Course in September 2020. The event is jointly organized by Ryder Cup Europe and Professional Golfers’ Association of America (PGA). Due to this, hosting responsibilities shift alternately between the United States and European countries.

Since the recently concluded Ryder Cup was held at Le Golf National near Paris, France last September, the U.S. will be the host for the next round of this golf event. As announced by the organizers, the 43rd Ryder Cup will be held September 25-27. The 2020 tournament will be held at the Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin.

The Whistling Straits, which started its operations in 1998, has been included in Golf Digest’s list of World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses for 2017 and 2018. This world-class links-style golf course is no stranger to hosting large golf tournaments. Aside from being the location for the 2020 Ryder Cup, the Straits course also served as the venue for PGA championships in 2004, 2010 and 2015.

The current champion is Europe after beating the U.S. team in the last golf contest with a winning score of 17½ against 10½. Fans of American golfers are nevertheless hopeful that the home court advantage will help the U.S. team snag the championship in the next golf Ryder Cup in 2020. Records show that since the first Ryder Cup in 1927, the U.S. golf team has 26 wins, 14 losses and two ties. Meanwhile, the Europe team has a record of 14 wins, 26 losses and two ties.

Tickets for the 2020 Ryder Cup have yet to be announced, but those who want to purchase early can sign up for notifications on the official website. Once enrolled, they will receive notifications with information on how to purchase tickets or make reservations and when they will be available.

The following details about the venues for the Ryder Cup through 2036 have been announced:

  • After the 2020 match, the event will move to Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, in Rome, Italy.
  • For 2024, the tournament goes back to U.S. as it will be held at Bethpage State Park in New York.
  • For years 2026, 2030, and 2034, the event will take place in Europe. The exact venues are yet to be announced.
  • The Ryder Cup will return to America and be held at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota in 2028.
  • For 2032, The Olympic Club in San Francisco, California is the destination for fans of U.S. and European golfers.
  • The 51st Ryder Cup in 2036 will be at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland.

About the Ryder Cup

This golf event held every two years is one of the most anticipated events for golf enthusiasts worldwide. The name of the tournament was derived from Samuel Ryder – an English businessman who was also an avid golfer himself. Ryder supported the idea to organize and fund a golf match between the best professional golf players. The inaugural match featured professionals from Europe and the United States. The first official Ryder Cup was in 1927 and held in Worcester, Massachusetts. For the winner,  Ryder donated a gold trophy.
